AFTERNOON

Paul

He stands looking down at the black bags once more. There is something strangely familiar about the shape of them: the way they are presented and packaged. Whatever is inside looks too heavy to be in a black bag – not like a black bag should look if it just contained food waste. No, these look like they have something in them that shouldn’t be there. Paul, with scissors in his hands decides to open one of them; he settles for the smallest one. His hands are shaking as he bends down and cuts into the bag; liquid squelches inside. He cuts some more and the bag unravels itself rather too easily, opening up slightly, but not enough to see what the contents are. No, he will have to do that himself.

Paul pulls back the edge of the bag, as the stale smell inside wafts out. He holds his nose and lets the smell fade. Dark liquid drips down the inside of the plastic bag. Paul brings the bag closer to him to take a better look, it feels heavy. He peers further into the bag to try and work out what the object inside is…It looks like… it looks like hair. Shocked, but needing to continue, he takes a closer look, his mind slow to work out what it is. It’s round… like a ball… but what could it be? He takes another look, his eyes now focusing hard on the object and this time it is plain to see what it is. It’s a… it’s a HEAD. The images all come together now like a jigsaw puzzle. It is Lee’s head. No longer attached to its fine muscular body, hair matted with blood, eyes and mouth open in a gruesome death rictus.

‘Oh – shit!’ says Paul as he pushes away the bag and falls back onto the wooden floorboards that run the length of the living room. He uses his legs and hands to push himself away from the open bag, not wanting to look, but compelled to do so. ‘HOLY SHIT!’ he shouts uncontrollably, as he continues to push himself towards the back wall to get far away from the bags in the middle of the room. With so much fear inside him, he pisses himself and urine runs down the inside of his leg. Is he capable of doing this? His back hits the living room wall with a thud, and only now does he remember to breathe. His breathing is quick and erratic. He can feel his heart pumping adrenaline around his body. Scared and not knowing what to do, he screams out Lee’s name.

‘That’s enough, you bastard! The joke’s over. WAKE UP NOW!’

‘Get up,’ he whimpers irrationally, as tears fall down his face. What has he done?

The decision he made on Friday, outside work, to go down the pub could have been the worst one of his life.
